Vermont Downtowns and Wal-Mart
Rutland
Depot Park, next to the Wal-Mart parking lot in downtown Rutland is a
gathering place for festivals and the Farmers' Market. Downtown Rutland is
one of Vermont's finest, with great architecture and a good mix of locally owned
shops and restaurants including a downtown Wal-Mart. Working with the
Preservation Trust of Vermont, Wal-Mart took over a former K-Mart location in
downtown Rutland in 1997. The 70,000 square foot store has proven to be a
real draw for downtown Rutland. A Wal-Mart employee recently revealed that
Wal-Mart plans to close the store and build a big box outside of town.
Wal-Mart headquarters deny the plan.
